G.H. Mumm Grand Cordon Brut Champagne
Mumm Grand Cordon is the epitome of the House’s signature style. Mumm Grand Cordon embodies the full range of nuances from the Pinot Noir grape variety grown in the Champagne region of France. They are sourced from more than 100 crus in Reims for a bold, rich wine that subtly balances the power and structure of Pinot Noir with the elegance and minerality of Chardonnay, as well as the fruitiness of Meunier. A portion of the reserve wines in this cuvée are aged in oak vats, bringing even greater aromatic complexity.
Toasting milestones, personal achievements, or simply celebrating friendship with an impromptu gathering, the exceptional freshness of Mumm Grand Cordon champagne evokes the exhilaration of life’s most unforgettable moments. In the glass, you’ll notice a golden brilliance with a stream of fine, persistent bubbles. On the nose, Mumm’s Grand Cordon presents a bracing richness and complexity, offering fruity notes of ripe peaches, apricots, and pineapple, as well as hints of vanilla, yeast, and honey. This champagne is bold and structured, unique in its predominantly Pinot Noir blend. On the palate, you’ll find notes of tart apple, pear, citrus, almond, and brioche.
Because Maison Mumm has successfully tempered Pinot Noir’s austerity and developed its innate elegance with each blend, they are able to create unique and high-quality Pinot Noir-dominant blends. The house renews its exploration of the variety’s infinite potential, refining and transmitting a unique savoir-faire. And with each cuvée, Mumm exalts a different dimension of the grapes' multifaceted personality. Mumm is careful to keep the different crus and grape varieties apart, ensuring the character of each terroir is preserved until blending. Blending is the art of combining wines made from different grape varieties and crus to create champagnes of consistent excellence that are true to Maison Mumm’s house style. This subtle art is considered to be the “signature” of any champagne house. To reach the blending stage, Mumm winemakers taste, note, and memorize around 2,000 samples every year.
We’re offering a gift box which includes one bottle of G.H. Mumm Grand Cordon Brut Champagne and a set with two tulip champagne flutes for only $48. The revolutionary bottle, with its iconic red ribbon molded directly into the glass, honors the past with a future-oriented spirit. G.H. Mumm’s red ribbon has paid homage to the Legion of Honour since 1876. The Legion of Honour is a premier order of the French Republic. It was created by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19, 1802, as a general military and civil order of merit conferred without regard to birth or religion, provided that anyone admitted swears to uphold liberty and equality.
G.H. Mumm’s fabled winemaking history was written long before its official founding date in 1827. The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. In 1761, the Mumm family were wine producers and merchants in Cologne, Germany, under the name P.A. Mumm, after its owner Peter Arnold Mumm. The company owned extensive vineyards in the Rhine Valley, where it produced its own wines. The Mumm brothers decided to establish a new branch of the family business in the Champagne region, with the assistance of a local representative, G. Heuser. From the outset, quality was a key ingredient in Mumm’s winemaking, and it has remained so for 200 years. Their approach is encapsulated by the motto penned by Georges Hermann Mumm: “Only the best”.
Very early in its history, Maison Mumm realized the importance of establishing a system to ensure the highest quality, supervising every stage in production, from grape-growing practices in all its vineyards to the crucial pressing process. The House demonstrated its capacity for innovation, as well as its strong commitment to terroir – one that has never wavered throughout the centuries – by setting up its wine presses directly in the vineyards, an innovation symbolizing its commitment to quality that continues to this day. Maison Mumm also introduced a supply policy that was unprecedented at the time: purchasing grapes directly from growers in the finest vineyards rather than unfermented juice. This approach allowed the company to verify grape quality and to press the juice itself. In this way, genuine partnerships were forged with growers, from whom the House demanded “only the best”.
In 1852, Georges Hermann Mumm, a son of one of the founders, took the reins of the company, which would henceforth be known as G.H. Mumm et Cie. In establishing the Mumm vineyards, he laid the foundations for a company strategy emphasizing excellence. Open-minded and a defender of social progress, he instituted a system of prix de vertu and primes d’infortune, designed to provide economic assistance to workers disadvantaged due to age or disability.
In 1876, paying tribute to his prestigious clients, he had the neck of every bottle of his Cuvée Brut decorated with a red silk ribbon. This decoration was inspired by the red sashes bestowed upon distinguished individuals receiving the highest French honors, the Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint Louis and the Grand Cordon de la Légion d’Honneur. Beyond the visual strength of the red ribbon, this decision firmly established Maison MUMM as an ambassador of the Champagne spirit.
