Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Kamptal Grüner Veltliner

Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Kamptal Grüner Veltliner is a bright, acidic wine with lemon curd, herbal, and limestone notes. The citrus oil and zest notes are lively and well incorporated. We think this is a great companion for a warm summer day and grilled asparagus. At $20 this is a bottle made to share. It’s a classic expression of Austrian wine and extremely drinkable.

The grapes used for this Grüner Veltliner are from the young vines, under 20 years old, and come from the best sites around Heiligenstein, grapes from the higher altitude of the valley bring a freshness and the grapes from lower in the valley bring maturity to the wine. It is a quintessential Grüner Veltliner. Schloss Gobelsburg is a Cistercian monastic estate, it is one of the oldest wineries in the Austrian Danube area with a documented history that dates back to 1171.

In 1996, Eva and Michael Moosbrugger took over the estate. Under their leadership, Schloss Gobelsburg Estate has become one of Austria’s leading Grüner Veltliner producers. Moosbrugger understands and deeply appreciates the wealth of history to which he was handed the reins. He has made it clear that he intends to build on Schloss Gobelsburg’s legacy and honor the extensive history of winemaking that has taken place at the estate. When expanding cellar space, Moosbrugger wouldn’t use concrete or steel because of their limited lifespan (of only 100 years).

Based on this, it is no surprise that Gobelsburg’s winemaking emphasizes traditional techniques and a focus on terroir expression. Vineyard work is done by hand and mostly follows organic practice.  Moosbrugger likes to ask, “How is the vineyard best expressed?” when creating the wines. “My intention was to bring the elements of the Danube regions together," Moosbrugger said. “The Danube region can bring wines of substance alongside the ease of drinking. It is fascinating how quickly the bottle is emptied. This is it: the great drinkability of these wines. It was a fascinating project.” This is a great expression of the Grüner Veltliner varietal from a winery which Karen MacNeil, author of the Wine Bible, calls "one of the great wine estates of the world."
